Peyton’s Story

Peyton is a remarkably brave 16 year-old who has been experiencing symptoms from PANDAS for nearly a decade. Despite their symptoms, Peyton continues to persevere in life and find joy and fulfillment in the present moment. Read more about Peyton’s ambitions and wisdom as they continue to navigate PANDAS.

How old were you when you first began experiencing symptoms of PANDAS or PANS, and which disorder do you have?

I started experiencing PANDAS symptoms at around seven years old.

Explain how PANDAS/PANS has influenced your personality and overall life experience. How have these symptoms impacted your life?

PANDAS has made me an incredibly resilient person, shaped by the challenges I’ve had to overcome and my ability to use humor to ease tense situations. My symptoms—like brain fog and ADHD—make school especially difficult, affecting my ability to complete assignments and take tests. Beyond academics, I also face social challenges, as many people don’t understand my long-term absences and what I’m going through.

What is the most valuable advice you can offer to others who are in the thick of their PANDAS/PANS symptoms?

I would encourage others to lean on the people closest to them for support—talking to someone during difficult times can make a world of difference. No matter how hard things get, there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and you will come out stronger than ever.

What is your dream job and vision for your future?

My dream is to work in public health, where I can help educate communities about PANDAS and ensure that no child goes undiagnosed because of a lack of awareness.

Were there any particular moments or experiences that made you feel understood or supported during your journey?

After recently testifying at the State House and hearing stories of people who have gone on to college and found great success, I felt a renewed sense of hope and support—knowing that I, too, can achieve success despite living with my illness.

How has living with PANDAS/PANS changed the way you view your own health or how you approach overall wellness?

Living with PANDAS has shown me how short life can be, and it's taught me to live in the moment and make the most of the times when I feel well. It’s also helped me recognize how certain choices my friends make can impact not just people like me with PANDAS, but the broader community too.

How did PANDAS/PANS affect your relationships with family, friends, and peers? How did they respond to your diagnosis and symptoms?

PANDAS has significantly impacted all my relationships due to my missed school; it is very challenging to develop strong friendships. However, all my family and friends are extremely supportive of me during flares.

Peyton, you are wise beyond your years. We love your mindset, perspective, and philosophy on life as a whole and your experience with PANDAS. From everyone at the NPYA, we love you 💚
